Tuesday February 16 marks the first of several days throughout the spring semester, called “Spring Relaxation Days,” that will take the place of a traditional spring break. No classes will take place on this day, and in their place, Mount Union Counseling Services has planned events occurring throughout the day for students interested in participating, all of which are scheduled to take place in the Newbold Room of the Hoover Price Campus Center. For the early risers, the first event, Sonic Yoga, will start at 9 a.m. and will be a mix of both sound therapy and all levels of yoga. The activity aims to “restore balance and harmony within the mind, body, and spirit” through the use of crystal singing bowls and other healing instruments.Moving forward to 11:30 that morning, there will be a more craft focused event: vision board creation and sound healing. Students will be able to create collages that consist of both images and words, and will act as a good exercise in creative. In layman’s terms, this activity is also supposed to manifest good vibes. The instruments present in the previous Sonic Yoga activity will also be present here, giving off soothing sounds and vibrations. The next event will begin at 2 p.m. and will be led by Dr. Packard and Tim Campbell. Their Koru Meditation activity will teach students how to focus thoughts through the use of breathing exercises, body scanning, and short words and phrases. The neuroscience behind these techniques will also be explained. At 4 p.m., there will be an event that has been held before at Mount Union: a sound bath experience. Dr. Packard and the Counseling Services last held a sound bath experience in February of 2020, and an article by Lindsey Collins detailing the experience can be found here. The final event planned by the Counseling Services for the day is called a drum journey. Another therapeutically focused event, the drum journey will use the beat of a drum to provide a trance-like experience, allowing students to journey inward for self- healing. If any of the events listed interested you, be sure to sign up sooner rather than later; availability is limited. This link leads to a registration page in which you can sign up for any and all Counseling Services events on February 16. No matter what you do that day, be sure to take care of yourself. Catch up on sleep, homework, and just enjoy yourself.
