The fifth seeded Raiders traveled to Columbus, Ohio to take on the fourth seeded Crusaders in an OAC quarterfinal matchup on November 5. Mount Union entered the tournament fresh off a 2-0 win over Ohio Northern in the regular season finale and looked to carry the momentum onward. It was a back and forth game as the teams traded goals for 90 minutes and found themselves locked in a 2-2 tie when the final whistle of regulation was blown. Each team scored one goal a piece in each half. The Crusaders got their regulation goals from Nick Scharfenberger (9th minute) and Sam Spirk (75th minute). Meanwhile, Colton Priester (14th minute) and Jon Schroeder (79th minute) got the Raiders on the board.
In overtime, neither team was able to get many opportunities to score, as both teams combined for five goals across both overtimes. The Raiders went into penalty kicks with a 16-8 advantage in terms of total shots. In penalties, the Raiders managed to prevail 5-4 by making five straight shots after Brian Belz missed the first shot for the Raiders. Mount Union got successful penalty shots from Xavier Pinaya, Ryland Wikle, Schroeder, Josh Lewis and Daniel Chung. Capital got successful shots from Shane Niemeier, Spirk, Brandon Woo and Greg Knox. The win for the Raiders was sealed when Capital’s Matt Scheper sent a shot high over the crossbar. With the win, Mount Union traveled to take on second-seeded Otterbein on Thursday November 7 at 7:00 PM.
