ALLIANCE, Ohio- The Purple Raiders football team kicked off its 2018 campaign with a 54-0 victory over Rose-Hulman on Saturday night at Mount Union Stadium.

The Purple Raiders opened up the scoring on Saturday night with a one yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry/Perry). The touchdown was set up by a miraculous 47 yard run by junior quarterback D’Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) as he avoided Fightin’ Engineers in the pocket and made a break for the goal line, he was just a yard short of the touchdown. Fulford on the night finished 17 of 27 passing, threw for 192 yards and 2 passing touchdowns. Fulford also rushed for two touchdowns.

Mount Union’s starting offensive line featured one returner in Brendan Klaus (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) Saturday night. The Purple Raiders went with an all-junior offensive line. Running back Josh Petruccelli said, “They have worked all summer, they have been grinding it out and they look like a veteran group.” Petruccelli ran for 115 yards on 13 carries and added a touchdown.

The Purple Raider defense picked up where they left off from last season as they held the Fightin’ Engineers scoreless in the opening game. Linebacker Trey Williams (Cardington/Cardington-Lincoln) had a team high seven tackles in Saturday night’s win. Austin White (Wadsworth/Wadsworth) added in five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown that went 21 yards to put Mount Union up 31-0 in the third quarter.

With the 54-0 victory over Rose-Hulman, Mount Union has now won 31 consecutive home openers and leads the Nation with 16 wins in a row. The Purple Raiders will have a bye week next Saturday.

Ohio Athletic Conference play begins in Berea, Ohio for Mount Union as they take on the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets (1-0) at George Finnie Stadium Saturday, September 15. Kick-off is slated for 2 P.M.
