Petruccelli

After a shocking loss in the second round of the Division III NCAA Playoffs at the hand of North Central; players, coaches, and fans did not know what to think in the moment. Soon after, breaking news comes out that head coach Vince Kehres would be leaving Mount Union for a job with the University of Toledo. The Raiders said goodbye to a coach with a  seven-year tenure that included two National Championships in five appearances.

All the shocking news took over the minds of  fans and made them forget the fact that both quarterback D’Angelo Fulford and his number one target Justin Hill will graduate this year. Coach Geoff Dartt takes over a program with questions on offense. The answer, maybe be at running back.

Josh Petruccelli will walk into his Senior year with the most to offer . The three-year starter is coming off a Junior season where he ran the ball 196 times and accumulated 1,335 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also added 190 yards and two touchdowns on 18 receptions in the pass game.

Petruccelli set career highs in every receiving stat and was on pace to set a career high in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns had he had the usual fifteen games a Mount Union running championship run offers. Each year has seen gradual improvements from the back from Perry, 2020 should offer the same.

We already witnessed a glimpse of what the offense looks like when ran through Petruccelli when he was forced to take the ball 41 times in a rainy game at Heidelberg. He ended up with 194 yards and three touchdowns in a 21-0 win on the road.

We have also saw him run the offense as a wildcat quarterback here and there, and it might be something we see again this year with a new quarterback and head coach.

When asked about what last season means for this season, Petruccelli said,

“I believe with how the season ended last year, it has made the as a whole hungrier for next season, and wanting to go out and prove that year should not have happened.”

He also talked about his role as a senior leader saying, “I’m excited for a new role as the senior leader on offense, I always try to help the younger players during practice the best I can.”

Petruccelli talked about the goals for the team and the teams he looks forward to playing next season saying, “Our team goals are always nothing short of the national championship every year, and the team I am most excited to face this year is John Carroll, I believe they give us our best game every year and it is home this year and the atmosphere is always crazy.” Then he went on to add, “I am also hoping for another shot at North Central (IL) because of what happened last season.”
