The #2 Mount Union Purple Raiders defeated the #16 Case Western Reserve Spartans in the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs 45-16.

Justin Hill (Circleville/Circleville) began the scoring for the Purple Raiders on their opening drive in the first quarter. Hill caught a 20 yard touchdown pass from D’Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla./Miramar). Fulford on the day completed 19 of his 28 passes attempted. Fulford finished with 233 yards passing and 4 touchdowns.

Fulford’s top target on the day was senior wide receiver Braeden Friss (Avon/Avon). The bubble screen performed by the Purple Raiders hindered the Spartans defense and made Mount Union’s offense move the ball down the field efficiently. Friss finished the game with a career best 11 catches and racked up 80 yards receiving in the victory over the Spartans

Mount Union’s defensive back Kollyn Crenshaw (Solon/Solon) had a key pick six off a deflected pass from Case Western’s Rob Cuda in the first quarter that would shift the momentum to the purple and black as they would take a 14-0 advantage over the Spartans in the opening quarter.

The Purple Raiders defense pressured Cuda and the Spartans offense throughout the ballgame. Mount Union would total five sacks on Case Western Reserve and force three interceptions in the first half. Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Austin White (Wadsworth/Wadsworth) lead the Purple Raiders on defense against the Spartans. Robinson would finish with nine total tackles and one and a half sacks. White would finish with eight total tackles.

“They are a really good opponent and they won their conference, we respect them a lot, but it is like any other game, they are a balanced team and we have to stop the run and pass this week” Danny Robinson said before the matchup vs. Case Western Reserve.

Charlie Dear (Massillon/Massillon Jackson) continued by saying; “week by week we have a similar game plan, but we have a bunch of keys to success each game and one of those being stopping the run, this forces our opponent to become one dimensional. We think we’ll have a pretty successful day when we force the opponents to pass the ball.” Dear would finish the game with seven total tackles and credited with half a sack.

Mount Union got an extra boost from their rushing game as they would total 223 yards on the ground. Jawanza Evans-Morris (Coral Springs, Fla./Taravella) would carry majority of the load with 110 yards gained on 13 attempts. Josh Petruccelli (Perry/Perry) would pick up 88 yards on 14 carries.

Justin Hill finished the day with four receptions for 72 yards and two touchdowns, while his teammate Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) would catch four passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns. D’Angelo Fulford now has 48 touchdown passes on the 2017 season.

The #2 Mount Union Purple Raiders advance to the quarterfinals to take on #17 Frostburg State (Md.) Bobcats. Kick-off is slated for high noon at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday.
