It was business as usual on February 25 when the Lady Raiders welcomed the Kenyon Ladies to Mount Union Stadium for their season opener. Kenyon came into the game with a 2-0 record with wins over Westminster (PA) and John Carroll University.
The Ladies kept the affair close with the Raiders in the first half and even pushed their lead to three in the middle ten minutes of the half. Mount Union opened the scoring when sophomore Mackenzie Lewis put a shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Tori Simon with 28:19 left in the first half. For the ten minutes following, it was all Kenyon as the Ladies went on a 4-0 run. In that run, the Ladies got goals from freshman Tatumn Eccleston (21:07), senior Avery Morgan (19:54), and junior Julia Mahoney (19:18, 18:35).
Coach Fisher’s crew managed to end the run by Kenyon when senior Danielle Rohrman scored on a free position shot with 17 minutes and 45 seconds left in the half. This goal was followed by a 6-2 run for the Raiders to close out the half. In the run, the Ladies got a pair of goals from freshman Caroline O’Neil (16:29, 00:37). The Raiders got goals from junior Sydney Bumbarger (14:49, 7:15), freshman Julia Bates (12:16), junior Kaitlyn Murphy (1:59), and Rohrman (9:16, 00:26). The score secured the first hat trick for Rohrman in her senior campaign and sent the Raiders to the locker room with an 8-6 lead.
After halftime, the Raiders came out firing, and it was all Purple Raiders in the final thirty minutes. In the second half, the Raiders outscored the Ladies 10-4 and got goals from senior Mackenzie Pensyl (28:53, 22:09, 7:11), Rohrman (21:45, 13:02), freshman Madi Karr (22:46), freshman Sam Karr (10:09), Bumbarger (18:46), Murphy (16:08), and Lewis (6:01). The quartet of goals in the second half for the Ladies came from sophomore Brett Bearrows (27:12), Eccleston (17:04), and Morgan (3:09, 00:27). Mount Union’s Danielle Rohrman finished with a game-high of five goals as the Purple Raiders knocked off Kenyon 18-10 to win their sixth straight season opener. Coach Fisher and the Lady Raiders will next be in action on March 3 when they host Allegheny (7:00 P.M.) and continue through their nonconference schedule.
