The Raiders entered Wednesday’s game against Wilmington with a wave of momentum behind them and kept it rolling in a 17-2 win over the Quakers. This game was one of the four games for the Purple Raiders this spring that will not count in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.
Mount Union started the scoring off quickly and wasted no time as Logan Addonizio sent a shot past Wilmington’s Reed Beavers just thirty-seven seconds into the game. Wilmington managed to deny the Raiders offense for a good chunk of the quarter from that point on and tied the game when Austin Young sent a shot past Kyle Reihner with 7:31 left in the first quarter. Forty-seven seconds later, Addonizio answered with another goal to give the Raiders the lead for good and kickstart a four-goal run to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Wilmington’s Sawyer Starrett stopped the run by the Raiders when he scored a goal with 11:43 left in the first half. That would be Wilmington’s final goal of the night and the Raiders closed the half with a four-goal run that was capped by a pair of goals by Alek Kungle. After thirty minutes of play, the Raiders went to the locker room with a 9-2 lead over the Quakers.
The second half was all Raiders as Wilmington was shut out in the second half by the Mount Union defense. On the other end of the field, the Raiders’ offense stayed hot and tacked on eight more goals with eight different Raiders getting in on the action. A pair of freshman Raiders, Garrett Koenig and Ben Jones, hit milestones in the second half as they scored their first career goals. Clay Barkan closed the scoring for the night when he sent a shot past Beavers with 3:33 left in the game to put the Raiders up 17-2.
With the loss, the Quakers dropped to 0-4 (0-2) on the season. On the flip side, the Raiders improved to 3-1 (2-0) on the season and extended their win streak to three games. Mount Union will next be in action on Saturday March 20, 2021 when they travel to take on John Carroll University in an OAC matchup (1:00 PM).
