It’s been a phenomenal year so far for the Mount Union men’s volleyball team, and the Raiders continued their roll when they welcomed the Olivet Comets to the MAAC on February 21. The Raiders entered the match 9-1 overall, and the Comets came in at 1-7. Mount Union dominated from the first serve and never looked back.

In the first set, the Raiders opened with a 10-3 run behind kills from Mark Bruns, Andrew Cross and Sam Matonis. Olivet would manage to pull back within three points after an error by Bruns made the score 11-14 in favor of the Raiders. However, that would be the closest the score would be as the Raiders closed out the set on an 11-7 run, which was capitalized by a kill by Justin Sibbel to clinch the first set (25-18) for Mount Union.

Olivet came out swinging in the second set and kept the score tight for much of the set. The Comets managed to get their first lead of the night after a kill by Aaron smith put them up 10-9. Smith and company would get the lead a handful of times throughout the rest of the sets as the two teams traded one- and two-point runs in the middle of the second set. However, Mount Union took the lead back for good when Smith committed a hitting error. The Raiders went up 2-0 on sets and closed out the second set after a kill by Cross and an error by Smith (25-20).

In the third set, the Raiders dominated and maintained a healthy lead for most of the set. Although the Comets would manage to draw within two (17-19) when Olivet’s Aaron Giorgi registered a kill. From that point on, the Raiders went on a 6-6 run that was capitalized by a monster swing by Sibbel. This clinched the set and match for the Raiders (25-23). Mount Union is next in action on March 3 when they host a tri-match against Alderson-Broaddus and Geneva. Those matches are set for 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. respectively.
