I lounged on the dock, ate ice cream, and dipped my toes into Lake Erie. Music from the concert at Hoover Auditorium wafted through the air. Other interns sat next to me, chatting about work, family, and friends. How lucky am I, I thought, That this is how I get to spend my evenings after work?

This summer I was the advancement and communications intern at Lakeside Chautauqua, an organization located in a private community in Danbury Township on the shores of Lake Erie. As an intern, I was responsible for tasks such as interviewing local business owners, writing blog posts and newspaper articles, and using software such as Microsoft Publisher to create event invitations and flyers. Through this internship, I was able to gain valuable experience in my major, improving aspects of my written and oral communication skills.

While searching and applying for internships can be daunting, these experiences are crucial to your collegiate growth and can act as important gateways to your professional career. Even though some internships offer low wages, small stipends, or are completely unpaid, internships are sometimes required for course credit and/or will lead to jobs after graduation.

Utilizing the Center for Student Success is a great way to prepare yourself for your future and to learn more about internship opportunities. For example, I learned about the Lakeside Chautauqua internship through the OFIC CareerFest in Columbus which I attended through the Center for Student Success.

Mount Union’s Center for Student Success provides students with access to affordable career fairs, mock interviews, resume workshops, and professional clothing. The Center is holding an event where students can not only get their resumes proofread, but also receive free, professional wardrobe items. This event is titled “Raider Rack & Resume Reviews” and will be held on Thursday, September 27.

When considering internships, it’s important to make sure that the opportunity is right for you. Be sure your experiences and characteristics are compatible with those the employer is seeking and that the duties and responsibilities of the internship are tasks you’re willing to complete. When speaking with potential employers, ask questions such as ‘What does a typical day in this internship look like?’ ‘What types of characteristics and skill sets are you looking for in an intern/employee?’ and ‘What skills and experiences can I expect to gain from this internship?’
