The Alliance High School football game wasn’t the only thing occurring outside on last Friday night. Coffeehouse, Raider Programming Board’s take on a talent show, was hosted for the first time outdoors.

The event, which is normally hosted inside Campus Grounds in the Hoover Price Campus Center, made its fall 2018 debut to a crowd of about 60 students on the HPCC patio. Spectators from the community even stopped by the event after hearing the music during the football game.

Coffeehouse was kicked off with a special guest performer who played alongside student performers. Carl Wockner, a singer/songwriter from Bundaberg, Australia, specializes in guitar loops and special effects. Wockner played two half-hour sets of original music and popular covers. Four student performers also graced the stage. Some notable performances from the students include an original slam poetry selection and an impromptu song on the piano about coffee.

Between Carl Wockner and the student performers, Coffeehouse lasted about two hours and provided attendees with a broad range of selections. In addition to being his first performance at the University of Mount Union, it was also the first time Wockner had spent more than an hour in Ohio.

“It’s fun to be up North for once while it’s nice and sunny!” Wockner stated as he opened Coffeehouse Friday, noting that it had been winter the last time he was through.

Wockner also offered encouragement for students to keep supporting Coffeehouse.

“I’m glad to see a good turnout for this event tonight” Wockner stated, “These sort of things can’t happen if you don’t come.” He also encouraged students to tell their friends to come with them next time.
